What Happened
On June 18, 2023, a major fire at the Clean Planet recycling facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan was prolonged when crews found broken fire hydrants and seized valves in the surrounding water system. Firefighters had to relay water from distant sources while the industrial fire burned. Seized hydrant valves are a classic finding of skipped maintenance — hydrants that are never operated, lubricated, or flow tested gradually freeze in place until the day they are needed.
