How much does a standpipe flow test cost?

Price is driven by the number of risers, building height and access, system type (a manual or dry standpipe requires pumping into the FDC), water discharge and permitting requirements, travel, and whether you bundle other tests into the same mobilization. Bundling is the single biggest lever — three tests on one trip costs far less than three separate trips. Send us the building details and we typically return a quote within one business day.

What makes one building more expensive to test than another?

Multiple risers, high floor counts, restricted access, manual or dry systems that require truck pumping, jurisdictions that require hydrant permits or water metering, discharge locations that need containment or dechlorination, and off-hours scheduling to avoid disrupting tenants. None of these are surprises if the quote is scoped properly.

How quickly can you schedule a test?

Most testing is scheduled within days to a couple of weeks depending on season and location. Acceptance testing tied to a Certificate of Occupancy gets priority scheduling because the cost of a delay is so high. Tell us your deadline when you request a quote and we will tell you honestly whether we can hit it.

What access and preparation do you need from us?

Accepted Answer

Access to the riser, the fire department connection, the roof or top-floor outlets, and the hydrant we will draw from. We need alarm monitoring placed on test, elevator or stairwell access coordinated, tenants notified, and any hydrant permit in place. We handle the permitting coordination; you handle building access and notification.

Where does all that water go?

Accepted Answer

Discharge is directed away from the structure, landscaping, and pedestrian areas — typically to a storm drain or an approved discharge point identified in advance. On sites with containment or dechlorination requirements we plan for those. Expect a wet sidewalk for an hour, not a flood.

Question 6

Do you have to shut the building down?

Accepted Answer

No. Occupants stay in the building. The fire protection system is temporarily impaired during testing, which means an impairment procedure and alarm coordination, but there is no evacuation and no loss of building services. Most tenants only notice the truck outside.

FLOW performs on-demand testing across Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, North Carolina, and South Carolina, operating out of Richmond, VA. Travel outside that footprint is possible for larger scopes — just ask.
