    Why it takes a pump: the 500 + 250 gpm standpipe demand

    The reason the water side needs a fire truck and not a hydrant hookup is the standpipe's designed demand. NFPA 14 sizes a Class I or III standpipe around a commonly referenced 500 gpm for the hydraulically most remote standpipe, plus 250 gpm for each additional standpipe flowing simultaneously — up to a system maximum — at a minimum residual pressure at the remote outlet.

    Proving that demand means actually delivering it: flowing 500 gpm (and often 750, 1,000 gpm or more across multiple risers) at the required residual pressure at the most remote hose valve. A garden hose off a hydrant cannot do that. It takes a pump rated to the demand, connected at the fire department connection — which is the whole reason a genuine flow test is a truck job, not a clipboard job.
