5-Year Standpipe Flow Test Planning Checklist
A practical pre-test checklist for commercial property managers, facility teams, and owners preparing for standpipe flow testing.
Planning early reduces access issues, avoids unnecessary disruption, and helps your team keep a complete compliance file. Use this checklist as a coordination guide; building-specific requirements and the authority having jurisdiction may add steps.

30–60 Days Before the Test
- Confirm the system type, number of standpipes, and the building’s most remote hose valve.
- Gather prior inspection and test records, relevant drawings, and any open deficiency information.
- Identify the property contact, fire-alarm monitoring contact, and building access requirements.
- Reserve a testing window that avoids tenant move-ins, major events, and critical operations.
7–14 Days Before the Test
- Confirm fire department connection access, nearby hydrant access, staging space, and any loading-dock or street-use requirements.
- Notify affected building staff and tenants of the planned test window and brief impairment period.
- Coordinate any required alarm-monitoring or impairment procedures with the appropriate parties.
- Confirm roof, mechanical-room, stairwell, and hose-valve access before the crew arrives.
On Test Day
- Provide site access and a knowledgeable property representative for questions or building coordination.
- Keep pumper-truck staging and hydrant access clear.
- Confirm any building-specific safety or discharge-routing requirements with the crew.
- Record observed issues and keep the test data with the building’s fire-protection records.
After the Test
- File the test data, calculations, photos, and final reporting with your maintenance and compliance records.
- Address documented deficiencies promptly with a qualified fire-protection contractor.
- If AHJ, insurer, or owner requirements call for a licensed-firm report, confirm final reporting coordination.
- Set a reminder for the next required testing cycle and any corrective follow-up.
