What Happened
FDNY firefighters Joseph Graffagnino and Robert Beddia died in the line of duty at the August 18, 2007 Deutsche Bank Building fire, trapped on upper floors with no water. The building's standpipe — the system that should have delivered water to their hoselines — was disconnected and inoperable, its breach hidden in the basement. Investigations found the standpipe had not been inspected as required. The line-of-duty deaths became the defining U.S. example of why standpipe systems must be tested and verified operational, especially in buildings under construction or demolition.
